Artist’s Corner

Tom Chestnut exhibits his work "Creation" at the Cooperstown National 2010.

Tom creates painterly photographic images of the wilderness landscape using film capture and the digital darkroom. He feels a meditative stillness when in the wilderness away from human distractions and strives to represent that stillness in his work. His goal is to express his deep spiritual connection with nature that has not been spoiled by human presence. Tom’s passionately created art has been appreciated by others since he was a child. One of his oils painted at seven was framed and hung in his father’s house. The first piece of art he ever sold was a pen, ink and watercolor wash drawing created at the age of thirteen.

Tom has no formal art or photography education. Instead, his formal education and professional life has been highly technical. Acquiring a B.A. in physics and a doctorate in neuroscience, researching brain physiology and analyzing AIDS services for the New York State Health Department, his work life has had nothing to do with art. Yet, Tom feels that the best scientists and researchers approach their work in a very intuitive, creative and artistic manner.

Currently, Tom’s work is exhibited and sold through galleries, art centers, retail shops and other outlets. He has recently participated in portfolio reviews and national workshops. Tom has started another fine art series entitled “Patterns of Light”, although this series is in its infancy.

The Barn: A Disappearing Icon: An Exhibition of Barn Paintings by Bob Crimi

Bob Crimi’s oil paintings capture the serenity and zen-like quality of barns as aesthetic images. The paintings are a personal record that celebrates a barn’s graceful beauty; a beauty that lies amongst trees and fields, seemingly devised by Nature itself. Some of the barn paintings are silent sentinels of the change that is our experience in life, while other paintings present barns in interplay with foliage and open spaces. In their unity and harmony, each painting is an entity unto itself. These elegant works of art are a pleasure to behold.

Creative self-expression has been my pursuit since apprenticing with my uncle, Alfred Crimi, fresco muralist and easel painter, in his sky light studio in the Greenwich Village of the late 1950s.

I was playing in the same sandbox, all be it with a smaller shovel, along with Willem DeKooning, Franz Kline, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Martha Graham, Jack Kerouac, and Samuel Beckett. As a fledgling artist, that environment of individual expression was mortar for me to build a strong foundation.

"The CCCA, as well as other local councils, should to be seen as a liaison, a hub, a center for artists at all levels of development, as well as, art aficionados and art collectors. This role should be accomplished by whatever means possible high tech and low tech."
Bob

DEC Individual Artist Recpient 2010
Call for Participation

Peter Donahoe is this year's Decentralization Grant award recipient. The artist wrote a grant proposal for a portrait series focusing on capturing what men with prostate cancer have gone through and how it has changed them. He received the grant and is now working on the project. Donahoe was driven by the lack of public visibility for prostate cancer. "We need to raise the level of consciousness. "People still don't understand that men die from prostate cancer. They need to understand their options and what’s available, and make a reasoned and informed decision".
Peter is a portraitist who uses an unusual instrument--a pinhole camera--to capture images of his subjects. Made from tin cans and film boxes, the primitive camera creates a circular image using long light exposures. The challenges of this old-world technique enable Donahoe to create works of art that portray intimacy achieved not only through his vision, but through the intensity of the process. Donahoe is looking for men with prostate cancer to help further education and awareness through this portrait series. For more information about Donahoe’s work or to contact him, visit his blog at http://moticamera.blogspot.com/2010/02/and-portraitsyes-and-portraits.html.

"The CCCA does an invaluable service in uniting artists and their communities. I have seen it grow and refine its outreach for almost 20 years. It represents the finest, most creative talents in the county and brings our work to our neighbors in challenging exhibitions and to locations across the county. I am excited to see how the members' show will be received in Chatham in the Fall and to present my work to a wider audience" - Peter

Decentralization Grants (DEC)
How we work together...

Both the Decentalization (DEC) program and the resources I offer in terms of technical assistance are services that CCCA offers the community. Dec Grants are New York State Council on the Arts monies administered by CCCA. Basically, CCCA is responsible for the promotion and adminstration of the DEC program in accordance with guidelines and priorities set forth for us by the State. As the DEC Coordinator, I'm part of the staff of CCCA. Although I work out of Greene County Council on the Arts office in Catskill because of space limitations, however, I am available to meet with artists and applicants at CCCA's office on Warren Street in Hudson.

The DEC program is intended to bring literary, visual, and performing arts programs to residents throughout our county. More than half of the programs that we fund are free to the public and the others reasonably priced - making these experiences highly accessible. After 6+ years of administrating this program, I still find the level of imagination and commitment concentrated in Columbia County remarkable. What is especially rewarding is that these small awards support such a wide diversity of artistic offerings - programs that appeal to individuals of all ages and tastes. Since our grants program encourages under exposed art forms and seeks to attract underserved audiences, we both support innovation and strive to build new local audiences for the arts in Columbia and Greene Counties.
New applicants are always welcome! For more information on grants please contact me at the following URL Colettegcca@hotmail.com,.
There will be a Free Grant Writing Workshop on Sat Aug. 14th from 10 am – 12 noon at CCCA or any of the other locations listed at www.greenearts.org/pdf/TWIN_Counties_cultural_FUND.pdf

I look forward to hearing from you!

Putting Your Best Foot Forward & Not in Your Mouth
As I was reviewing the Social Media Participation Guidelines for CCCA Board Members, it occurred to me that some of these rules/guidelines/pointers, what ever you want to call them, are really universal.
Anybody using any social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, would only positively affect their reputation as well as their business by remaining mindful of these simple guidelines:
  • Post meaningful, respectful comments, no remarks that are offensive
  • Use common sense & common courtesy
  • When disagreeing with others opinions, keep it appropriate & polite
  • Be smart about protecting yourself, your privacy, your business
  • Remember, what you publish is widely accessible & will be around for a long time. Google has a long memory

Sparks of Change...

Fellow CCCA Members and Friends:

Time has come today time for change and July sparks a history of change in the form of independence and freedom of expression for all. As artists and patrons of art, we express thoughts, feelings, and emotions without hesitation or constraint; a wonderful heritage. Our only pressing goal is to present our treasured works to those who have the desire to see it and hopefully, purchase it. Hence, we change and mold ourselves to serve that end. Our July Newsletter is dedicated to CCCA’s commitment to change as progressive and in alignment with the needs of its members. Please continue to read along and find out about CCCA’s changes and become a part of it all. We need each and every one of you to spark like fireflies during our "dance of commitment" with the arts in Columbia County.

Katarina Holbrook, Editor

From the Executive Director

Dear Members:

CCCA has the pleasure of introducing some new faces and voices as our family is growing!

First, we have a newly elected Board President, Karen Hummel. Karen has been on the CCCA Board for about 3 years and accepted this position with great enthusiasm. We are happy to have her serve CCCA in this capacity and at this level.

Robert Holmes is working on the erroneous e-mail addresses in our database system. He is diligent and you may well hear his voice on your answering machine asking if CCCA has your correct e-mail address. He comes to us from Experience Works – a national community-based organization that helps older adults get the training they need to find good jobs in their communities. If you are 55 years of age and unemployed, you can call 1-866-976-5939 to find out what programs or resources you may qualify for.

Linda Romanchuk is working on her specialty: membership. She has enjoyed a successful track record with the American Cancer Society, Olana, and the Center in Rhinebeck. We’ve already enjoyed a spike in our numbers due to her keen focus.

A big change – Melissa Stafford accepted the post of Event Manager for ArtsWalk 2010. Her fresh ideas and passionate energy are contagious and sure to infuse new energy into our October 8-11 festival!

Since we’re talking Arts Walk 2010, I’ll put a shameless plug right in. We are delighted to announce that we are growing and expanding! This year you will enjoy Windows On Main in Chatham in addition to our historic Windows on Warren in Hudson. We still have event sponsorship as well as volunteer opportunities available. Please feel free to contact me colleen@artscolumbia.org or call 518-671-6213 to hear more.

Colleen Schaffernoth

Farewell

CCCA thanks Marilyn Barry for her many years of service. Marilyn served as CCCA Board President and interim Executive Director over the past year and did it with the utmost professionalism, compassion, and humor.CCCA would not have succeeded without her guidance and vision. Marilyn also served as secretary for many years. Thank you Marilyn Barry for all your hard work!

"Pie Face", Artist – Cynthia Mulvaney

"New" President of the Board
Karen Hummel, CCCA Board President

Karen was born in NYC and grew up in Dutchess County and was a Visual Arts educator for 33 years at Ichabod Crane Central School District in Columbia County where she taught Studio Art, Drawing and Painting, Illustration, Mixed Media, Art History. She was also a district wide Art Department Chair for 13 years, co-directed an art studio in Maine for a summer camp for 2 years and teaches visual arts to adults privately in classes and workshops.

As an artist, Karen works in differing media as suited to the subject she is expressing. Other creative works include: writing, illustration, murals, calligraphy, commissions, design-including a boulder garden (all rock), and a custom headstone.

Karen retired in September 2008 to pursue all things artistic and creative and hence, her entrance to CCCA—where she chaired the Gallery Committee and served as Vice President over the past year.

My Fellow CCCA Members:

For CCCA, the only constant is change. As the President of the Board of Directors, I would like to welcome everyone to a page in our history. We are 45 years old..One of, if not THE first Arts Councils in New York State. You all are part of this legacy. Over the years Boards met in homes, in Chatham, and Spencertown Academy. Our digs have been in Hudson for almost a decade now. The Arts Council reflects the changing culture and profile of our County which continues to evolve. This year will be no different in serving in this County wide capacity the best we can.
We’ve added 2 new board members, Jan Grice, who volunteered with Hudson River Theatre as President and is a multi-talented performing artist. Also Maryellen Miner joins us. Maryellen is an attorney in Hudson and served on the Board of the Pleshakov Center.

Our Executive Director, Colleen Schaffernoth, has been proactive in soliciting funds, writing grants and brainstorming new creative ways to make this organization fit the times we live in. Our Board of Directors oversees the operations and continues to work on streamlining things.

CCCA is about social connectedness, links to other artists and ideas with friendships continually made. It’s a place to share your work - whether through Artswalk venues, community shows, our online Artists registry, or our CCCA gallery. The links are made, and membership increases.
Some goals for this year:
  • Bigger and better—Funding is key with our non profit status.
  • Expand our support of the Literary and Performing Arts.
  • Grow Arts in Ed opportunities in the community.
  • Keep our CCCA doors open more days and hours.
  • Expand utilization of our ED and staff to work on membership, community outreach, grants, and funding, increasing our profile and fiscal picture.
Our collective investment in CCCA is what will sustain and nurture its growth. The momentum is building.
Your enthusiasm and positive energy will feed ours as we move forward! Let’s go for it!
With warmth and in creative spirit, the best that we can,
Karen Hummel, CCCA Board President

"Stuyvesant Beach" – Karen Hummel

New Board Members:
Jan Grice

"CCCA is the major player in the advancement of the arts in the county. It is such a pleasure and honor to be involved in the efforts of this fine organization. CCCA is working harder every year to support the artists of our area through its many programs."

Jan Grice has been involved in theatre for over 60 years. Jan danced in the West Texas Ballet Company, The Lubbock Modern Dance Theatre, and his own Modern Jazz Company, performed at Dallas Theatre Center, worked in regional theatre and appeared in over thirty musicals in summer stock. He worked off-off-Broadway as dancer, singer, and choreographer with the late Al Carmine at Judson Memorial.

Jan worked for architectural and interior design firms in New York City, and for 17 years he traveled all over the U.S., South America, Japan, Hawaii and Puerto Rico as the National Director of Design and Planning for what was then Price Waterhouse. He was Design and Planning Specialist for Kd OfficeWorks in Hudson for 9 years and Kimberly Scott until he retired in 2006. He was president of the Board of HRC Showcase Theatre for eleven years.
Maryellen Miner

I am lawyer practicing in Hudson for over 30 years with my husband Lance as Miner & Miner. I am also a hobbyist-painter. In addition to the usual canvasses in various stages of completion, I have single-handedly painted over 6,000 square feet of theatrical backdrops for Upstage Productions and Hudson Middle School musicals - but who’s counting?

"I believe "ya gotta have 'art"! I am delighted to serve on CCCA board and hope to positively contribute to the arts community."

ArtsWalk Update
About a month ago CCCA approached me and asked if I would be the event manager of the 2010 ArtsWalk celebration. I was thrilled with the opportunity and happily signed on.

ArtsWalk is a festival, with fifteen strong years behind it and celebrates the art in this remarkable county. This is an event forpeople who are curious, inspired by, and perhaps passionate about the arts, and there are a lot of you here in Columbia County.

CCCA connects artists with arts enthusiasts and I have met many wonderful people over the years through my involvement with CCCA. I have experienced countless exhibitions, performances and programs because CCCA exists. More personally, I felt like I had a voice. I had ideas - for large public exhibitions, for musical events – and with CCCA’s help, I was given the opportunity to produce these incredible experiences. I am very excited to collaborate with you on this new adventure.
This year’s event promises to be anything but ordinary. We have some phenomenal art projects in the works, plans for more exhibition opportunities, performances, literary events, music collaborations, a brand new website, and more!

I know you care about the arts. I want to hear from you and together let's figure out how you can participate in this year’s celebration. If you used to participate (as an artist, a performer, a volunteer, an attendee) in ArtsWalk and you stopped or you have an idea, or just want to help. Please contact me at melissa@hudsonartswalk.com or 518.526.2999. You will be needed! For ArtsWalk updates please visit www.hudsonartswalk.com

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas and of course, seeing you all at ArtsWalk in October!

Social Media -Expanding the Artists' Conversation

In my travels around the different social media universes, it is impossible not to notice how effectively artists are using the different social media platforms to showcase & share their art. "But, I have a website. Why do I need a Facebook page or a Twitter account or a Flickr account”, you ask? You need them because currently, these additional venues offer artists free visibility. Additional platforms & venues to get more eyes on your work are always a good thing, so why not utilize these resources?
It’s easy & free & there are numerous resources on the web to help you in setting up your own accounts & pages every step of the way.
Just type in “social media for artists” in your favorite search engine – an endless list is right at your fingertips.

"I think the CCCA is an invaluable organization for artists working in upstate NY. The numerous shows, especially Artswalk in the fall, provide opportunities and challenging standards for serious artists. It's rare to be able to participate with so many talented artists outside New York City. Hudson and the CCCA give the upstate artworld a real focus."

Battan is a Montreal born and Climax, NY based artist and studied Visual Art and Theater at Toronto’s York University where he graduated with an Honours Bachelor Of Fine Arts degree.
For ten years he went on to direct large scale musical theater productions literally all over the world for Cameron Macintosh and Disney Theatrical. This theater work afforded him the opportunity to absorb foreign cultures while working intimately with other artists from Seoul to Buenos Aires. After traveling the world intensely for a decade, he has now focused his energies again here in Climax, New York where he has spent the past four years creating his DOORS series, drawing with colored pencils on old wooden doors and found objects

We Leap, We Bound, We Jump...

It has been just about a year since we published our 1st newsletter.  And, what a year this has been.  Together - we have grown our membership, created and displayed greater and more diverse art work, and enhanced our infrastructure to expand our activities outside of our Warren Street Gallery and into other venues and activities within Columbia County.  This is a great testimonial to our commitment to the arts. Please join me in a loud Hooray and read on to catch glimpses of events we have in the works keeping in mind that it is all for you - our dear CCCA members and their treasured art works.  If you have not renewed your CCCA membership - please do so now - I just did.  I look forward to seeing and talking with you at future CCCA events .

From the Executive Director...

Dear CCCA Members,

The past two months have been a whirlwind of activity and excitement. And, wait until you see the fresh new look at our #209 Warren Street gallery hand painted by our own Gallery Committee. It really popped for the "On and Off the Wall" Sculpture show. We anticipate this fresh new look will be a crowd pleaser for the entirety of our 2010 Gallery Schedule.

I am delighted to join CCCA's Board of Directors in announcing ArtsWalk 2010, scheduled for October 8, 9, and 10. This year’s long awaited event has grown to include the village of Chatham in the heart of our beautiful Columbia County. Along with the windows on Warren you will be touring the windows on Main in Chatham!
Stay tuned for the CCCA ArtsWalk call for volunteers E-blast. This year we will provide a survey form for your input. The brief intake form is designed to connect your experience, strengths, and talent with a volunteer opportunity that fits you.

Our Newest Board Member...
Deborah Lynn Davis

"I participated in the planning of ArtsWalk for a number of years and now want to be able to use the opportunity of serving on the board as a way of expanding my  involvement in the ongoing expansion of the arts community in Columbia County."  Debbie

Deborah practiced law in New York in both the public and private sectors for more than twenty-five years. In mid-1999 she "retired" from the full-time practice of law to pursue her interest in art. She became the director of El-Baz Gallery, a Soho contemporary art gallery. Wishing to spend less time in Manhattan and more time in Columbia County where she had been a "weekender" for many years, she opened Deborah Davis Fine Art, Inc. in Hudson, New York in 2001. Her gallery represented contemporary American, Canadian, European and Israeli artists including many who live and work in the Hudson Valley.

"Face to Face"
June 12 - July 30, 2010.  Opening Reception 6/12, 5 - 7 pm

Juror:  Joan Damiani

"The artists of “Face to Face” are simply outstanding. Their art reflects diversity, study and passion. There are many styles, many levels of skill - but, each piece will create substantial mental and emotional activity for the viewer. W
hat this body of work will present publicly brings to the fore the opportunities offered to its members by the Council. It is an organization for the artists; so if you are not a member, become one."

Joan Damiani was born and educated in New York City.
“Art for me is a never ending journey. Sometimes photography, sometimes painting, but always the light and dark and always the challenge of capturing that moment in life that you forgot to remember.”
Joan began exhibiting in 1996 at the Columbia County Office Building and then at the CCCA, Fox Martin Gallery, Hudson Opera House and Film Columbia. She has been invited to jury shows and present workshops for fellow artists in Columbia and Greene Counties.
Since 2004, Joan has been showing exclusively at the J. Damiani Gallery, now located at 237 Warren Street, in the historic district of Hudson, New York.  http://www.jdamianigallery.com/
Joan's latest project is to get visitors to wander below Third Street in Hudson - known as “BeLo 3rd”.

Dick Morrill: Renowned Artist, Professor/Teacher and Philanthropist

Many heartfelt thanks to Dick Morrill for being the juror of our first annual sculpture show, "On and Off the Wall". His choices graced the walls of CCCA with a look and feel that embraced and celebrated all forms of sculpture.  The choices were strong, imaginative and demonstrate a representative cross section of CCCA's sculpture artists. http://www.dickmorrill.com/

" CCCA builds awareness in the arts by providing a vital service that keeps artists working by offering opportunities for artists to exhibit their work and have the citizenry of the community see and appreciate it."

Dick makes narrative paintings, portraits and bas reliefs, capturing in highly charged images the spectacle of social folly and vagaries of the personality. His work both critiques power relations, and examines the inner lives of individuals. Using bold colors and fractured forms, Morrill in his art is both an expressionist and a humanist.was born in 1927 and grew up in the Boston area. His family nurtured his talent and as a youth Dick attended Saturday morning art classes at the Museum of Fine Arts. After serving in the Navy during the war, he went on to study illustration and painting at the Cambridge School of Design.

Work above and to the right is titled "Blue Girl"
While in art school, Morrill discovered the work of Max Beckmann in a museum exhibition of his work at Harvard University. In Morrill’s work we see a reflection of Beckmann’s interest in cryptic allegorical narrative. Morrill’s portraits reflect the work of two other artists central to his development. Evident is the influence of Paul Klee in the use of line to create whimsical and psychologically revealing images. From Rembrandt’s faces, particularly his late self-portraits, Morrill learned the possibility of creating searching, penetrating paintings of the inner self.

CCCA sends a big Thank You to Hermenio Ramirez for the wonderfully delicious bird fruit sculptures.  Hermenio keeps the village of Kinderhook alive through the winter months with fascinating and varying snowmen sculptures - he is a consummate universal artist.  And - "Thanks to board members Katarina Holbrook and Tomm Eaton for wine and hors d'oeuvres."

14th Annual Juried Art Show

Hudson Opera House
Opening: 2/20, 6 - 8pm

Juror, Janet Riker

"A juried exhibition is by nature a risky proposition. For the juror it is an opportunity to do what curators like to do best: look at art or more often a digital or mechanical representation of art. Frequently, the juror is considering work not seen before and viewed without the benefit of knowledge about the context in which the work was developed. As a process, it is imperfect and highly subjective but at its best it represents a leap of faith on the part of artist and juror that is democratic, generous, and holds the promise of a fresh perspective."

 JAS Prize Sponsors

CCCA offers sincere thanks to the following sponsors for our JAS prizes: First prize sponsors Marty Davidson, Sculpture; Patricia Coughlin, Painting; Nancy Rutter, Photography. Second prize sponsors Dick Morrill, Painting; Carrie Haddad, Sculpture; Anonymous, Mixed Media; Lael Locke, Photography; DeGuerre Blackburn, Works on Paper. Best in Show, Jack Shear. Note: Two first prizes ($250 each) are still available. Please notify us if you can sponsor one of these.

"Since I moved to Columbia County, over 20 years ago, CCCA has always been there to support me as an artist and in turn bring the arts to the County. The Council has tirelessly provided space to exhibit local artists work. It has provided me with a gathering space to connect with fellow artists and art lovers when I might never have left my studio. For this I will always thank them!"

In bringing the arts to the county whether it be Artswalk, Dogs on Warren or Riders Mills, the Council gives people a chance to get out and share different perspectives. Isn’t that what art is all about?

CCCA Holiday Show with Arthur Price

The works of Arthur Price graced CCCA's walls for the holidays and provided an inspirational backdrop for our first annual holiday art show.  This year we participated in the Belo 3rd holiday theme, "12 days of Christmas".  CCCA artists Karen Hummel and Fran Heaney were the creators of our window displays.

Thank you Karen and Fran for our beautiful window displays!

In with the New...

Hello CCCA Members and Friends:

2010 is our year.  Together, we continue to make great strides forward in the progress, growth, and success of CCCA to effectively support and promote the arts in Columbia County.  To serve that end, we have added 4 new board members, an Executive Director, Executive Assistant, and a bookkeeper to the infrastructure of the organization.

2009 was a cornerstone in our development. It was a time of change and restructure, a time to assess and renew our commitment to the arts in Columbia County. We have done that, and to our credit, added 5 new exhibits to our gallery schedule, implemented our 1st holiday show, redesigned our web pages, and grew our membership and staff.

This article is dedicated our members, staff and our new beginnings.

Katarina Holbrook, Editor

Dear CCCA Members,
I am delighted to be a part of Columbia County Council on the Arts mission. In my lifetime there have been magnificent changes in Columbia County. I was born at Columbia Memorial Hospital, raised in Ghent, and attended Chatham School District, Columbia Greene Community College, and later on, SUNY Empire State. I moved away to Rhinebeck briefly in 1976 and returned for good to restore a grand old Victorian on Allen Street in Hudson in 1979.
Along this journey, it has been a pleasure watching the growth of such a vibrant arts community and our experiences with CCCA have really helped nurture our family. My husband is a fine art photographer, my son a budding musician, and my adult daughter enjoys professional dance. Certainly this brings a unique perspective to my post as Executive Director.
My work experience has been split almost evenly between years in drafting / design and those devoted to not for profit fund raising. The early 90’s brought a new challenge with AIDS work via NYSDOH grants for prevention, education, and case management and later on I was recruited to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.
I want to thank the CCCA board of directors for selecting me to help steward this important mission as well as honor the support and vision of our CCCA members.
Colleen Schaffernoth, Executive Director

Farewell and Thanks  to Interim Executive Director Sue Chiafullo...

As of October 31, Sue Chiafullo, former Board of Directors President and Interim Executive Director at CCCA, stepped down from the post she held for nearly eighteen months. During CCCA's time of need, Sue selflessly stepped up to the plate and took the reins of the organization with no pay. In the ensuing months she learned every aspect of the position, navigating her way through a host of unknowns, from computer applications to impersonal state agencies.

After much thought. Sue decided it was time to concentrate on her career as owner of her own commercial film production firm. It will come as no surprise to learn that the names for promotions such as Best in Show, and Dog Gone for our 2008 public art project and the culminating auction of decorated dogs, and Hail Columbia for last fall’s multi-agency event promotion over Columbus Day weekend were all Sue’s brainchildren. After all, she spent decades as a commercial producer for firms such as Ogilvy & Mather, Scali McCabe Sloves, and Young & Rubicam Inc. in New York, and Campbell Mithun Esty in Minneapolis. She produced commercials for clients such as TWA, American Express, General Mills, Andersen Windows, Met Life, AT&T, and many more.

The CCCA Board joins our more than 800 members, and indeed, the entire arts community of Columbia County in thanking Sue for holding our organization together as we approach our 45th anniversary and a future of renewed purpose and stability.

CCCA Board President

New Board Members...
Maria Kolodziej
I feel that the CCCA is the hub of communication for the art community. I started out as a volunteer and recently took on the position of Board member. I wanted   to  be a part of an organization that embraces and supports our local artists. Being part of that process is important, personally, to me as an artist and long-time resident.

Martha Harvey
Martha is a local Hudson resident & possesses no artistic ability. With years of corporate marketing and administrative experience, close attention to detail and a strong positive can-do attitude, Martha strengthens the CCCA’s ability to be an effective presence in the Columbia County Arts Community. Martha works for Sharp Electronics Corporation in the Strategic Marketing & Communications Division and also oversees the corporate charitable donation budget for SharpUSA.She lives with her partner, Holly & a very demanding calico cat, Zoe.

Dave King
Dave holds a BFA in painting and film from Cooper Union and an MFA in writing from Columbia University; he taught English at Baruch College and Cultural Studies at the School of Visual Arts in New York before moving to New York University’s Gallatin School of Interdisciplinary Studies. Of his bestselling debut novel, the New York Times Book Review  wrote, The Ha-Ha is full of emotional truth and establishes King as a writer of consequence.

King’s poems and essays have appeared in The Paris Review, The Village Voice, Ninth Letter, Big City Lit, and the Italian literary journal Nuovi Argomenti. He divides his time between Brooklyn and the Hudson Valley of New York.

Cynthia Mulvaney
"I joined the CCCA because I wanted to be a part of the arts community in our area. I joined CCCA because I wanted to support the broad range and variety of artistic outlets and opportunities there were in our area! Opportunities to participate as well as opportunities to enjoy the talents of others, whether it be fine art, performance art or literary art! And with Greene County as our 'sister council', there's twice the opportunity for cultural involvement and enjoyment!  I'm happy and proud to be a member of the Council and help to share CCCA with others in our community; to help provide a wide variety of artistic programs for our artists to express themselves and grow through, and for our community to partake in and enjoy."

New CCCA Staff

Jessica Terdeman, Excecutive Secretary

I am excited to be working at CCCA. I have considered myself an artist since attending an arts high school in NYC and I have been interested in arts administration since I was an undergraduate at Alfred University. I believe the arts are an essential part of community. Supporting the arts helps create the diverse, changing and vital and place that is Columbia County.

Crisis in Haiti - an update and a plan

Urged by several of our board members and friends, the CCCA Board is partnering with the Hudson Opera House, Perform Columbia!, and local artists and friends to hold a fund raising event on Saturday, March 6, 2010 to benefit the Haitian Community Development Project. Local artists and others are invited to donate works of art or arts-related items or services for a silent auction to be held at Hudson Opera House from 3:30 until 7:30. Attendees will be asked to donate a modest admission fee. Performing artists will be featured throughout the event, and light refreshments will be offered. Winners of the donated objects will be named at 7:00 PM.
CCCA hopes that other segments of the community, such as area restaurants, theaters, retailers, and the like will take the opportunity to contribute in some way on March 6. To be included as an advertised partner, or to donate items or services to the silent auction, please contact CCCA Board member Cynthia Mulvaney at mailto:cynthiamulvaney@msn.com or (518)758-8568.
