Tom Chestnut exhibits his work "Creation" at the Cooperstown National 2010.
Tom creates painterly photographic images of the wilderness landscape using film capture and the digital darkroom. He feels a meditative stillness when in the wilderness away from human distractions and strives to represent that stillness in his work. His goal is to express his deep spiritual connection with nature that has not been spoiled by human presence. Tom’s passionately created art has been appreciated by others since he was a child. One of his oils painted at seven was framed and hung in his father’s house. The first piece of art he ever sold was a pen, ink and watercolor wash drawing created at the age of thirteen.
Tom has no formal art or photography education. Instead, his formal education and professional life has been highly technical. Acquiring a B.A. in physics and a doctorate in neuroscience, researching brain physiology and analyzing AIDS services for the New York State Health Department, his work life has had nothing to do with art. Yet, Tom feels that the best scientists and researchers approach their work in a very intuitive, creative and artistic manner.
Currently, Tom’s work is exhibited and sold through galleries, art centers, retail shops and other outlets. He has recently participated in portfolio reviews and national workshops. Tom has started another fine art series entitled “Patterns of Light”, although this series is in its infancy.

The Barn: A Disappearing Icon: An Exhibition of Barn Paintings by Bob Crimi
|
|
Bob Crimi’s oil paintings capture the serenity and zen-like quality of barns as aesthetic images. The paintings are a personal record that celebrates a barn’s graceful beauty; a beauty that lies amongst trees and fields, seemingly devised by Nature itself. Some of the barn paintings are silent sentinels of the change that is our experience in life, while other paintings present barns in interplay with foliage and open spaces. In their unity and harmony, each painting is an entity unto itself. These elegant works of art are a pleasure to behold.
Creative self-expression has been my pursuit since apprenticing with my uncle, Alfred Crimi, fresco muralist and easel painter, in his sky light studio in the Greenwich Village of the late 1950s.
I was playing in the same sandbox, all be it with a smaller shovel, along with Willem DeKooning, Franz Kline, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Martha Graham, Jack Kerouac, and Samuel Beckett. As a fledgling artist, that environment of individual expression was mortar for me to build a strong foundation.
"The CCCA, as well as other local councils, should to be seen as a liaison, a hub, a center for artists at all levels of development, as well as, art aficionados and art collectors. This role should be accomplished by whatever means possible high tech and low tech."
Bob

DEC Individual Artist Recpient 2010
Call for Participation
|
|

Peter Donahoe is this year's Decentralization Grant award recipient. The artist wrote a grant proposal for a portrait series focusing on capturing what men with prostate cancer have gone through and how it has changed them. He received the grant and is now working on the project. Donahoe was driven by the lack of public visibility for prostate cancer. "We need to raise the level of consciousness. "People still don't understand that men die from prostate cancer. They need to understand their options and what’s available, and make a reasoned and informed decision".
Peter is a portraitist who uses an unusual instrument--a pinhole camera--to capture images of his subjects. Made from tin cans and film boxes, the primitive camera creates a circular image using long light exposures. The challenges of this old-world technique enable Donahoe to create works of art that portray intimacy achieved not only through his vision, but through the intensity of the process. Donahoe is looking for men with prostate cancer to help further education and awareness through this portrait series. For more information about Donahoe’s work or to contact him, visit his blog at http://moticamera.blogspot.com/2010/02/and-portraitsyes-and-portraits.html.
"The CCCA does an invaluable service in uniting artists and their communities. I have seen it grow and refine its outreach for almost 20 years. It represents the finest, most creative talents in the county and brings our work to our neighbors in challenging exhibitions and to locations across the county. I am excited to see how the members' show will be received in Chatham in the Fall and to present my work to a wider audience" - Peter

Decentralization Grants (DEC)
How we work together...
|
|

Both the Decentalization (DEC) program and the resources I offer in terms of technical assistance are services that CCCA offers the community. Dec Grants are New York State Council on the Arts monies administered by CCCA. Basically, CCCA is responsible for the promotion and adminstration of the DEC program in accordance with guidelines and priorities set forth for us by the State. As the DEC Coordinator, I'm part of the staff of CCCA. Although I work out of Greene County Council on the Arts office in Catskill because of space limitations, however, I am available to meet with artists and applicants at CCCA's office on Warren Street in Hudson.
The DEC program is intended to bring literary, visual, and performing arts programs to residents throughout our county. More than half of the programs that we fund are free to the public and the others reasonably priced - making these experiences highly accessible. After 6+ years of administrating this program, I still find the level of imagination and commitment concentrated in Columbia County remarkable. What is especially rewarding is that these small awards support such a wide diversity of artistic offerings - programs that appeal to individuals of all ages and tastes. Since our grants program encourages under exposed art forms and seeks to attract underserved audiences, we both support innovation and strive to build new local audiences for the arts in Columbia and Greene Counties.
New applicants are always welcome! For more information on grants please contact me at the following URL Colettegcca@hotmail.com,.
There will be a Free Grant Writing Workshop on Sat Aug. 14th from 10 am – 12 noon at CCCA or any of the other locations listed at www.greenearts.org/pdf/TWIN_Counties_cultural_FUND.pdf
I look forward to hearing from you!

Putting Your Best Foot Forward & Not in Your Mouth
As I was reviewing the Social Media Participation Guidelines for CCCA Board Members, it occurred to me that some of these rules/guidelines/pointers, what ever you want to call them, are really universal.
Anybody using any social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, would only positively affect their reputation as well as their business by remaining mindful of these simple guidelines:
- Post meaningful, respectful comments, no remarks that are offensive
- Use common sense & common courtesy
- When disagreeing with others opinions, keep it appropriate & polite
- Be smart about protecting yourself, your privacy, your business
- Remember, what you publish is widely accessible & will be around for a long time. Google has a long memory

Sparks of Change...
Fellow CCCA Members and Friends:
Time has come today time for change and July sparks a history of change in the form of independence and freedom of expression for all. As artists and patrons of art, we express thoughts, feelings, and emotions without hesitation or constraint; a wonderful heritage. Our only pressing goal is to present our treasured works to those who have the desire to see it and hopefully, purchase it. Hence, we change and mold ourselves to serve that end. Our July Newsletter is dedicated to CCCA’s commitment to change as progressive and in alignment with the needs of its members. Please continue to read along and find out about CCCA’s changes and become a part of it all. We need each and every one of you to spark like fireflies during our "dance of commitment" with the arts in Columbia County.

From the Executive Director
Dear Members:
CCCA has the pleasure of introducing some new faces and voices as our family is growing!
First, we have a newly elected Board President, Karen Hummel. Karen has been on the CCCA Board for about 3 years and accepted this position with great enthusiasm. We are happy to have her serve CCCA in this capacity and at this level.
Robert Holmes is working on the erroneous e-mail addresses in our database system. He is diligent and you may well hear his voice on your answering machine asking if CCCA has your correct e-mail address. He comes to us from Experience Works – a national community-based organization that helps older adults get the training they need to find good jobs in their communities. If you are 55 years of age and unemployed, you can call 1-866-976-5939 to find out what programs or resources you may qualify for.
Linda Romanchuk is working on her specialty: membership. She has enjoyed a successful track record with the American Cancer Society, Olana, and the Center in Rhinebeck. We’ve already enjoyed a spike in our numbers due to her keen focus.
A big change – Melissa Stafford accepted the post of Event Manager for ArtsWalk 2010. Her fresh ideas and passionate energy are contagious and sure to infuse new energy into our October 8-11 festival!
Since we’re talking Arts Walk 2010, I’ll put a shameless plug right in. We are delighted to announce that we are growing and expanding! This year you will enjoy Windows On Main in Chatham in addition to our historic Windows on Warren in Hudson. We still have event sponsorship as well as volunteer opportunities available. Please feel free to contact me colleen@artscolumbia.org or call 518-671-6213 to hear more.

Karen was born in NYC and grew up in Dutchess County and was a Visual Arts educator for 33 years at Ichabod Crane Central School District in Columbia County where she taught Studio Art, Drawing and Painting, Illustration, Mixed Media, Art History. She was also a district wide Art Department Chair for 13 years, co-directed an art studio in Maine for a summer camp for 2 years and teaches visual arts to adults privately in classes and workshops.
As an artist, Karen works in differing media as suited to the subject she is expressing. Other creative works include: writing, illustration, murals, calligraphy, commissions, design-including a boulder garden (all rock), and a custom headstone.
Karen retired in September 2008 to pursue all things artistic and creative and hence, her entrance to CCCA—where she chaired the Gallery Committee and served as Vice President over the past year.
My Fellow CCCA Members:
For CCCA, the only constant is change. As the President of the Board of Directors, I would like to welcome everyone to a page in our history. We are 45 years old..One of, if not THE first Arts Councils in New York State. You all are part of this legacy. Over the years Boards met in homes, in Chatham, and Spencertown Academy. Our digs have been in Hudson for almost a decade now. The Arts Council reflects the changing culture and profile of our County which continues to evolve. This year will be no different in serving in this County wide capacity the best we can.
We’ve added 2 new board members, Jan Grice, who volunteered with Hudson River Theatre as President and is a multi-talented performing artist. Also Maryellen Miner joins us. Maryellen is an attorney in Hudson and served on the Board of the Pleshakov Center.
Our Executive Director, Colleen Schaffernoth, has been proactive in soliciting funds, writing grants and brainstorming new creative ways to make this organization fit the times we live in. Our Board of Directors oversees the operations and continues to work on streamlining things.
CCCA is about social connectedness, links to other artists and ideas with friendships continually made. It’s a place to share your work - whether through Artswalk venues, community shows, our online Artists registry, or our CCCA gallery. The links are made, and membership increases.
Some goals for this year:
- Bigger and better—Funding is key with our non profit status.
- Expand our support of the Literary and Performing Arts.
- Grow Arts in Ed opportunities in the community.
- Keep our CCCA doors open more days and hours.
- Expand utilization of our ED and staff to work on membership, community outreach, grants, and funding, increasing our profile and fiscal picture.
Our collective investment in CCCA is what will sustain and nurture its growth. The momentum is building.
Your enthusiasm and positive energy will feed ours as we move forward! Let’s go for it!
With warmth and in creative spirit, the best that we can,
Karen Hummel, CCCA Board President

Maryellen Miner
I am lawyer practicing in Hudson for over 30 years with my husband Lance as Miner & Miner. I am also a hobbyist-painter. In addition to the usual canvasses in various stages of completion, I have single-handedly painted over 6,000 square feet of theatrical backdrops for Upstage Productions and Hudson Middle School musicals - but who’s counting?
"I believe "ya gotta have 'art"! I am delighted to serve on CCCA board and hope to positively contribute to the arts community."

About a month ago CCCA approached me and asked if I would be the event manager of the 2010 ArtsWalk celebration. I was thrilled with the opportunity and happily signed on.
ArtsWalk is a festival, with fifteen strong years behind it and celebrates the art in this remarkable county. This is an event forpeople who are curious, inspired by, and perhaps passionate about the arts, and there are a lot of you here in Columbia County.
CCCA connects artists with arts enthusiasts and I have met many wonderful people over the years through my involvement with CCCA. I have experienced countless exhibitions, performances and programs because CCCA exists. More personally, I felt like I had a voice. I had ideas - for large public exhibitions, for musical events – and with CCCA’s help, I was given the opportunity to produce these incredible experiences. I am very excited to collaborate with you on this new adventure.
This year’s event promises to be anything but ordinary. We have some phenomenal art projects in the works, plans for more exhibition opportunities, performances, literary events, music collaborations, a brand new website, and more!
I know you care about the arts. I want to hear from you and together let's figure out how you can participate in this year’s celebration. If you used to participate (as an artist, a performer, a volunteer, an attendee) in ArtsWalk and you stopped or you have an idea, or just want to help. Please contact me at melissa@hudsonartswalk.com or 518.526.2999. You will be needed! For ArtsWalk updates please visit www.hudsonartswalk.com
I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas and of course, seeing you all at ArtsWalk in October!
