Thomas Erben began his professional involvement in the art world in 1989 as a private dealer focusing on contemporary American art. In 1993 he began organizing exhibitions in his private space, which led to the opening of Thomas Erben Gallery, located, until 2000, on Broome Street in Soho.
His inaugural exhibition in September of 1996 was an installation by Senga Nengudi. From the very onset, the program has been multidisciplinary and internationally oriented, showcasing emerging as well as established artists. Widely acclaimed, pivotal exhibitions at the gallery include:
ADRIAN PIPER - Food for the Spirit, 1997/98; The Mythic Being, 1999; Early Drawings and Other Works, 2000/01.
OLADELE AJIBOYE BAMGBOYE - The Unmasking, Part II; 2000.
HELENA ALMEIDA – Pintura Habitada, 2001.
PRESTON SCOTT COHEN - Toroidal Architecture; 2001.
TOM WOOD - The Bus Project, 2000 and Looking for Love, 2002.
SENGA NENGUDI – Repondez s’il vous plait, 2003.
FANG LIJUN – Woodcuts, 2004.
CONTEMPORARY ART FROM INDIA, 2004.
JUTTA KOETHER – I Is Had Gone, 2005.
DONA NELSON – Brain Stain, 2006.
CHITRA GANESH – Upon Her Precipice, 2007.
CONTEMPORARY ART FROM PAKISTAN, 2007.
In addition to the rigorous exhibition schedule, throughout the years Thomas Erben Gallery has actively participated in major art fairs across the U.S. and Europe. The gallery has also fostered ties between other prominent galleries, as well as esteemed public institutions. Institutional clients in the United States include MoMA, The Whitney Museum of American Art, SFMoMA, The Walker Art Center, MoCA Los Angeles, Fogg Art Museum, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum; and internationally, The Serralves Museum, Porto, Portugal.
Conceptually minded, the gallery strives to either rediscover or expose work that contributes to contemporary discourse and extends the possibilities of the artists’ chosen media.
