J. Scott Perry

After spending some time working with egg tempera, I have been working in oils over the past several years. While my paintings are representational, I have focused primarily on the use of color to control compositional themes, which by nature remain basically abstract. Most paintings are landscape inspired, and reflect the visual influences of life spent in the country and sailing.

I believe that a good composition should cause one to view and review a painting. A successful image should have a slight hypnotic effect, and should leave the eye somewhat restless within its bounds. I believe that painting is an art form which does not lend itself to narrative or political statement. I therefore try to create images which stand on their own, regardless of subject matter.
