IMAGES OF THE EVERYDAY

Watercolor Paper - Canvas - Silver Metal - Light Box

I have been working on two bodies of work that explore the same subject in different cultures. The first, which was started before and will continue after the other is finished, takes place in my AMERICANA. The second, investigating likenesses and differences in similar subject matter, is Paris. IMAGES ON THIS WEBSITE ARE FROM THE PARIS SERIES

Everyone functions in two simultaneous worlds: one is our immediate surroundings - the other is our world of reverie. We go to gathering places, and while we are relating to those around us, we concurrently experience feelings of being alone.

After studying and photographing scenes of the everyday, I use digital tools to highlight or alter meaningful elements within a scene to create tableaux that signify issues of solitude or connection, longing or alienation. I investigate ordinary people as they experience subtle and shifting states of social interaction, looking for people who convey something special embedded in what at first appears banal.

Images are in editions of ten prints, unique in size, media or interpretation. They range in dimensions from 12” to 60” in the smaller dimension. The ink is ultrachrome (homogenized ink and pigment) and original photos are taken either in film with a Leica or digitally with a Nikon camera.

In 1996 I switched from sculpture to photography and moved from Chicago to Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 2006 I moved to Red Hook, New York.
