Mimi Czajka Graminski

I drew and drew and drew as a child, made collages, assemblages. I made fantastical clothing, for my dolls, out of anything I could find. I discover myself circling back to those experiences. I love the texture and feel of cloth and thread, the rhythm of sewing.

I am often inspired by materials - the sensuous colors of chiffon fabrics, light bendable screen, a treasure trove of green plastic grapes. Other ideas come from the beauty of nature around me-piles of red twigs on the walkway to my studio, the bright red leaves of the burning bush, the colors of fall leaves mixing up together on the ground.

My dreams and life struggles can also inform my work. I translate my dreams, my connection to spirit and my feelings into my work; exploring how they interconnect. I make a bridge between the internal world and external world. My work has to do with layers of meaning, seeing through one thing to begin to find another. This is a world where a delicate translucent fabric can define space, shape and volume. In some cases the work has to do with the empty space inside the fabric, other times the space around it.
