Artswalk Performances

PERFORMING ARTS AT ARTSWALK

Columbia County Council on the Arts’ 13th annual festival ArtsWalk again emphasizes the performing arts.  Pendulums swing!  For an organization once touted for bringing the likes of the Dave Brubeck Quartet and Alvin Ailey Dance Company to the county – at the expense of the visual arts, some said – then was cited for over-emphasizing the visual arts, the pendulum is swinging back again.  Thank to the suggestions of many CCCA performing artist members and their friends, the Performing Arts presentations for CCCA's ArtsWalk have been very exciting the past two years.  Members invited friends to perform, friends became members, audiences, venues, and artists asked for more.  This year, performing arts offerings expand into two different Saturday nights, September 29 and October 6, with more acts and even more variety. In 2005, we staged the Folk Experiment at the Basilica Industria, the gigantic atmospheric brick former glue factory on the Hudson waterfront, that was a pleasant surprise in terms of engaging performances and a big, friendly crowd. In 2006, the Dance and Folk Showcase featured a night of fine performers with a wide range of styles.  By the end of the night, everyone blew off steam and danced. Mancini & Martin

This year, there will be two nights of performances. On Saturday September 29, music will be the focus of the ArtsWalk Music Showcase, with short sets of folk, rock and experimental sounds at Hudson newcomer Ciao Bella Ristorante Sicilia, 216 Warren Street, from 8PM till 12:30 AM.  An eclectic mix of folk, rock, and experimental music by CCCA member artists and regional avant garde performers from Hudson, Columbia County, New York City and beyond! Twenty minute sets showcase new works, old favorites and improvisation.  Check out original music, meet your friends, and stay for a short DJ set. The showcase features Bell Interludes, Ampersand, The Christine Spero Group, S.M.O. (Slink Moss’ Pop Goth band) and Chelle Mayer, Denise Jordan Finley and Dan Pagdon, WE (Cathy Johanson and Richard Skiermont, original Acoustic Folk/Rock Duo), Slow/Dynamite, The Holy Experiment, The Bleeding Skulls featuring Nandor, and DJ Dan.

Slink MossOn Saturday October 6 at Stray Bar, 521 Warren Street, the emphasis of the ArtsWalk Dance & Theater Show (with music! and drums!) will be on dance, theater and spoken word, from 4 PM till 12:30 AM. A wide range of performance from kids shows to Broadway-style theater, from dance to spoken word, from art rock to hard rock for adults. From 4 PM till 6:30 PM, as part of ArtsWalk Kids, there will be activities and performances for children, music & drawing with Chelle & Slinky Armadillo, performance by Walking the Dog Theater, and by Rhumpus and the Wild Things.  Scenes from Peter Pan by Upstage Productions (for all ages) bridges the gap between young and older audiences, at 7 PM.  More performances, dances and music continue throughout the evening to 12:30AM.  Peter Pan is followed by performances by The Two of Us Productions, Mancini & Martin jazz/eclectric/avant/spoken word, Eastern dance by Donna and Rami, The Badila Family’s Diata Diata International Folkloric Theater, Catskill Belly Dance, spoken word with Chavisa Woods and Itziar Barrio, The Love Artist Kathe Izzo, Norman Douglas’ spoken word, Slink Moss’ East Coast Band playing country rock, and White Limo

There will be something for everyone at both events. Come see original artists perform their newest works. The shows will be interesting and entertaining, and they are free!
