ONLINE TUTORIAL FOR SUBMITTING DIGITAL IMAGES

We have created this painless step by step guide to help artists who will submit their work utilizing a photographic digital format. This set of instructions is for digital beginners and you will need Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements software.

If you are familiar with the process please go to step 4, 5 and 6 for pixel size and image title and sending.

If you don’t have a computer or access to one, a local photolab can prepare your photographs for you using the file sizes in paragraphs 4 and 5.

This will be useful to you whether you use slides, prints or an original digital file but if your photograph is in any format other than digital ,print or slide, you will need to convert it. You may find it helpful to print this document before you start your work.

CONVERSION

For existing non-digital photographs:
Have it scanned. Ask the lab or technician to make a large file- eg:8”x10”@300 dpi

If you will make prints at a larger size such as 11x14 , have it scanned to the largest size you are going to use. Ask the lab to create a tiff file.

You will be able to use this master file for all your needs.

Digital images work best at the size they are created or smaller. Enlarging them beyond the size they are originally created at is not suggested.

Step 1. Open

Double click and open the digital photograph on your desktop.

Step 2. Duplicate

Go to the tool bar at the top of your screen - go to Image – choose Duplicate.

Hit OK

Once you have created the duplicate close the original. The changes you are about to make to this new photo will not effect your original file.

Step 3. Resolution

Go to Image (Resize in Photoshop Elements). Choose Image Size. You will need to resize the photograph regardless of how you originally created it whether it is a digital photograph or film scan.

Go to the lower left of the box and change the resolution to 72 – it is important do this first.

Step 4. Size

Go to pixel dimensions – change longest side to 600 pixels, the other side will size automatically. A “35mm”photo will now be approximately 8.3x6.25 inches and less than 1mb in size. This is important especially if you are sending the photograph by email.

Make sure the boxes for – constrain proportions and resample image – are checked.

Choose bicubic in the menu bar. These choices are not available in Elements

Hit OK.

Step 5 – Save

Go to File and to Save As
Choose the title for your photograph in the highlighted area of the ‘Save as’ bar at the top.  Avoid using symbols asterisks, commas or slashes (* , / #) as they may not be recognized.   The exception is the dash symbol(-). Avoid spaces between letters. Keep your title short. Most programs restrict a title to 31 characters. If your work is a series include a number sequence in your title -1of 4, 2of  4 etc.

Go to format drop down menu and choose jpeg

Step 6 - Store

Choose a destination for your work. If you wish to create a new file click once on the desktop, go to file in the tool bar and  choose new folder. This will appear on your desktop. Change the title in the highlighted area. Just type.

Click once on your ‘save as’ box.. scroll down and click on your new folder. This is where  you will store your new work.  Hit Save.

The jpeg option box will appear . Change the quality to 10. Hit OK

Double click on the folder you just created. Your new jpeg should be there.

Step 7 – Transfer and Send

A.    Transfer the file to compact disc. Label disc with work title, name and phone number.
B.     E-Mail - open program , enter address, type message.

Choose attach. When the box opens choose the folder you created earlier. It will be on your desktop. You will be able to select individual files from this folder. Hold down the shift key and select up to 3 at once.

Hit Choose File button on lower right. The images will appear in your e/m  outbox.

Hit send. If you have too many to send for your e/m program it will bounce back.

Delete the photos in the e/m box and select fewer photos.
